The 12 animals of the chinese animal zodiac are eating their Chinese New Year's Eve dinner.
The goat is the host because this is its year.
The monkey is trying to eat as many longevity peach buns as it can.
The rooster is drinking by itself.
The dog and the pig are fighting for the fish.
The mouse and the cattle are good friends.
The big cat is sharing some food with the little cat.
The rabbit is stealing all the carrots.
The chameleon substitutes the inexistent dragon to the party.
The snake enjoys the food in spite of not using chopsticks.
The horse is not happy about that it is not its year now.
The dragon is sad because he is being forgotten.
How's your Chinese New Year's Eve Dinner?
Happy Chinese New Year!!!!!

I knew Sam while I was an art school student in San Francisco. At that time, he was trained to be a pilot in East Bay. Therefore, I had a chance to take his training airplane up to the sky, and fulfill my dream of being a pilot for several minutes. Unlike me, an introvert, he is an outgoing man of great enterprise. Though we have different personality, we went there for the same reason. Chasing our dreams.
This July, Sam told me that he wanted a portrait for himself as his 30-year-old birthday gift. Normally, I will turn down this kind of project because this is not what I am focusing on now. But first, he is my friend. And second, I missed the day I learned how to paint acrylic painting with our great teacher Kazu Sano. I took this project and met him in early August. We had lunch together in a very good Japanese restaurant in Taipei. While we were eating some delicious Sushi, we chatted with each other and discussed about what kind of portrait he wanted. He showed me Icarus painting from the famous painter Henri Matisse and joked about that it will be ok if I paint him like that.
After taking the photo, I started to think about what kind of the portrait I want to do. As an illustrator, I wanted to make it in narrative way(maybe I should call it Kazu's way). And I thought about Icarus. Why shouldn't it be a portrait of Icarus? In fact, both us are Icarus. We try as hard as possible to fly high. Don't care about falling! Because if we don't try, who knows how far we can go? I am glad that at least one of us reach the sky now.
So, it turned out this painting. I am happy that Sam like it, and expecting to see this painting soon when it is hung in Sam's new place. Now, let's end these words with a poem written by Anne Sexton:
TO A FRIEND WHOSE WORK HAS COME TO TRIUMPH
Consider Icarus, pasting those sticky wings on,
testing this strange little tug at his shoulder blade,
and think of that first flawless moment over the lawn
of the labyrinth. Think of the difference it made!
There below are the trees, as awkward as camels;
and here are the shocked starlings pumping past
and think of innocent Icarus who is doing quite well:
larger than a sail, over the fog and the blast
of the plushy ocean, he goes. Admire his wings!
Feel the fire at his neck and see how casually
he glances up and is caught, wondrously tunneling
into that hot eye. Who cares that he fell back to the sea?
See him acclaiming the sun and come plunging down
while his sensible daddy goes straight into town.

I always want to paint the topic "Four Seasons". This year, thank my rabbits and my client. I had this chance to start this project. In spring, there is nothing better than a picnic under the cherry trees, isn't there? At least this is the best thing I can imagine in this season. A book, a cup of coffee, and some apples will be enough for me. Maybe a nap is even better! What is your favorite thing in spring? :)
This painting is hung in Dr. Paul Chen's Family Clinic now. And there is a little change because of the client request. Can you find out where it is?

Unlike United States, Father's day in Taiwan is in August 8th. It is because the pronunciation of 8 in mandarin is similar to "Pa". And "Father" in chinese is "爸爸". The pronunciation of 爸爸 is also similar to "Papa". Therefore, August 8th became Father's day in Taiwan.
Mother is someone who always gives me a hug at home. And Father is that man who supports me all the time. The memory that I was carried on the father's shoulder is still in my brain deeply. Thank you, dad! Thank you for letting me sit on your shoulder and see more things!
Thank you, Dad!

I did this painting because 2014 FIFA World Cup is in Brazil right now. I am not really a soccer fan. But every four years, I will turn on my TV (now is my computer) to watch this amazing soccer festival. This year, I thought that if I can paint some cute animals playing soccer would be a good idea. Originally, I just want to make it simple and easy. In the end, this is what it becomes. I am not saying that this is a bad painting, or I didn't work hard enough. It is just different from what I expect. I remember I asked one of my fine art teacher once, "Do you know what your painting will become at the beginning?" "No." He gave me this answer instantly. A painting is always like an adventure. You never know where it will take you to. I was just a little disappointed at the destination when I arrived. After one day, my feeling got better. I realized that my love and passion of the sport brought something in this painting. After all, you can't lie in your painting. On the other hand, I had fun and learned a lot in this adventure. Some of my friends love it,too. So, why should I be frustrated? Just be happy & keep going~ Ok! I believe this is what will happen to every illustrator. (And I think there aren't many people reading this blog so I can write nonsense words like this.)
Now, let's enjoy rest of the soccer games in this world cup!!!

I find that I am enjoying in drawing and painting these cute animals recently. So, it comes to this image that two animals are racing dragon boats for zongzi. And it is also fun to design these dragon boats made by paper boxes. I hope you guys like it and have a good holiday in this weekend!
